A Short Documentation of DIMENSION (V1)

Images from DIMENSION at the South Bank Centre, London

On the 13th of September Random Line installed the new multi media large scale projection, DIMENSION (V1) using the 5 screen video wall in the Core Ballroom at the South Bank Centre, London. It was commissioned by Heart n Soul to form a part of the Dean Rodney Supershow at the Royal Festival Hall.

DIMENSION (V1) is a surreal exploration of food, the digestive system and learning disabled culture  co-directed by Sian Davies (Random Line Media member).

The large scale projection presents a striking, surreal audio visual landscape, 27 minutes in duration played using the AI software installed at the South Bank. This uses 5 (frame blended) projectors to create a large single image running the entire width of the Core Ballroom in the Royal Festival Hall (4096 x768 pixels).

DIMENSION is an exciting project that will develop, promote and create new digital material exploring personal aspects of learning disabled culture and politics through powerful art. This version of DIMENSION was commissioned by Heart n Soul for the Dean Rodney Supershow which is a part of the Beautiful Octopus Club events. Random Line also received support from Lloyds TSB Foundation.

As a part of the evening Random Line members Tanya Thornley & Sian Davies created and performed a live VJ set using video and images developed especially for the event.

DIMENSION (V1) features video and images created by Random Line members Sian Davies, Tanya Thornley, Mark ONiel, Clive Medcalf, James Perry, Warren Bailey, Jenna Jackson and Andrew Williams (Artistic Director).

The sound was created by Random Line using material and structures developed over the past few years together with three pieces created and performed by the Dean Rodney Singers.

Over 2500 people attended the event at the Royal Festival Hall on the 13th of September.

Dimension - New Digital Media for the South Bank Centre, London

DIMENSION V1

This new work forms a part of a series of new digital media installations exploring several dimensions of learning disabled culture. THE COOKHOUSE DIMENSION is the first and will be shown at the South Bank Centre on the 13th of September, 2013 using the new 5 screen projection screen installed in the Ballroom.

This audio/visual installation presents a surreal exploration of food directed by Sian Davis (a member of Random Line Media). It has been commissioned by Heart n Soul to cellebrate the Dean Rodney project. This involved the creation of music with artists across the world. Random Line have created a visual artist response to one aspect of this work. Dean had imagined a world in which people lived within a stomach, creating and cooking food. Sian has chosen to explore the digestive system itself  - using this process to examine what we eat and why.

Many people with a learning disability have major issues with food and The Cookhouse Dimension explores some of these through a collection juxtopsed images and sounds. It does not have a narrative, but instead uses the images to illicit a response from the audience.

The video is 4096 x 768 pixels which will allow it to fill the 5 screen projection system developed at the South Bank. This system uses the AI software which was developed to run the video and lights for the Olympic opening ceromony. This in itself has been a challenge for Random Line, not interms of the software, but more in terms of the strange frame size of the projection screen. Composition within this frame requires a different approach and rendering time is considerable. This means that there has been less room for improvisation within the process as it takes too long to render files that can not or may not be used within the final installation.

Version 1 is to be shown on the 13th of September and responses together with  images from this installation will be posted here some after the event. In addition we hope that an interview with Sian (her thoughts of the process and final outcome) will also feature.

Still Images from The Video Wall Installation

A series of stills taken from the six new works forming a part of a large video wall installation for Mansfield (Notts) Bus Station.

Video Still from Red Storm & Cross

Visage uses portrait images (both still and video) taken by people with a learning disability to create a slowly evolving montage.

Red storm & Cross was developed as a collaboration with Sian Davies (Random Media core member) and uses images taken on location in Derbyshire, England. (Black Rocks, near Cromford) . Some work on this project was supported and developed at The Studio, Via Gellia Mill

Video Wall Installation

Random Line Media has completed six new visual works to create a Video Wall Installation for the new Mansfield Bus Station.

These works are currently playing (on timed loops) on the big screen at the Bus Station in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and were commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council Arts Service.

They have been created by members of Random Line working in collaboration with multi media artist Andrew Williams through a series of innovative projects in Nottinghamshire and on location in parts of Derbyshire. Each has its own theme developed using a mix of still and video imagery to create a slowly evolving visual language. The new works have been scheduled for repeated plays over the next 12 months
